Description

ITAA Culture and Industry Tour to Morocco

This immersive study tour is led by Jana Hawley, Dean at the University of North Texas, an experienced tour leader who has led study tours to India, Peru, Uzbekistan, Guatemala, Mexico, Europe, Japan, Laos, and Cambodia. The tour is designed for ITAA members with passion for handcrafted textiles and craft who crave deeper engagement with global craft traditions. Over two weeks, you’ll explore Morocco’s diverse regions—from the labyrinthine medinas of Fes and Marrakech to the sweeping dunes of the Sahara—while learning directly from master artisans and cultural stewards.

What You’ll Experience

  • Textile Workshops: From within the homes of Amazigh (Berber) artisans, you will learn how they choose colors, designs, shape, and textures for their traditional weaving, embroidery, and natural dyeing.
  • Craft beyond Cloth: Beyond textiles, we will explore pottery, basket weaving, hammam cooking, and colorful tile mosaics.
  • Cultural Encounters: Share meals, cooking, UNESCO sites, music, and stories with Moroccan families and nomadic communities.
  • Marketplace Explorations: Wander the souks to discover handmade rugs, felted slippers, spices, and treasures you won’t find anywhere else.

Why Morocco?

Morocco is a crossroads of cultures—Arab, Amazigh, Andalusian, and French—each contributing to its rich artistic legacy. This tour offers a rare opportunity to witness living traditions, support local artisans, and gain inspiration that will stay with you long after you return home.
